ROYAL MUSICAL COMPOSITION “SAENG
TIEN” “CANDLELIGHT BLUES”
In April 1946, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej composed
his first song, “Saeng Tien”, before he
had ascended the throne. The honour of composing the Thai
lyrics to ‘blues’ was granted to H.H. Prince Chakrabandh
Pensiri. But as His Majesty wished to improve the wording
he did not release the composition immediately. Prof.Dr.
Prasert Na Nagara, who also wrote lyrics for his Majesty’s
compositions, noted that:
“His Majesty mentioned that the wording at the
end of “Saeng Tien” was too melancholy. H.H. Prince Chakrabandh
Pensiri explained that his composition was a blues, and
that African-American blues were usually sorrowful. However,
His Majesty responded that even though they were sorrowful,
the endings of blues were usually philosophical, encouraging
people to fight through life and to be hopeful”.
However, “Saeng Tien” became His Majesty’s
third release --- following “Yarm Yen”
and “Sai Fon”, which were His Majesty’s
second and third compositions respectively. The first release
of “Saeng Tien” was sung by Mr. Euah Sunthornsanan
and performed by his band “Suntharaporn”. Later in 1953,
His Majesty granted the honour to Assoc.Prof.Sodsai Pantoomkomol
to compose an English version of the lyrics --- to the same
melody of “Saeng Tien” --- which was named,
“Candlelight Blues”
