ROYAL MUSICAL COMPOSITION “YARM YEN” “LOVE AT SUNDOWN”

On 16 December 1981, the committee of the Musicians Association of Thailand was granted an audience at the Dusidalai Hall, Chitralada Villa, to present a donation for use in His Majesty’s development projects. On that occasion, His Majesty referred to “Yarm Yen” as:

“ ’Yam Yen’, my second song, is one month older than ‘Sai Fon’, ‘Yarm Yen’ was born in the month of April, 1946.”

“Yarm Yen”, was composed before His Majesty ascended the throne. The Thai lyrics were composed by H.H. Prince Chakrabandh Pensiri while the English version, named “Love at Sundown”, was composed by Prof.Thanpuying Nopakhun Thongyai Na Ayudhya.

“Yarm Yen” was the first of His Majesty’s compositions to be performed publicly at a function arranged by the Association for the Prevention of Tuberculosis. As “Yarm Yen” has a fox-trot tempo it suited the Thais in those times, who enjoyed modern western dancing. It also greatly impressed the Thai people and soon became one of the most popular songs of the day. However, His Majesty commented that:

“While, ‘Yarm Yen’ is known, it is not as popular as ‘Sai Fon’ “.
