ROYAL MUSICAL COMPOSITION “CHATA
CHEEWIT” “H.M.BLUES”
His Majesty composed this blues
in Switzerland following his accession to the throne. The
simple melody of the song relies on a 12-bar series of specific
chords called ‘blues progession’, which is a key element
in the composition of songs typical of this style. Having
composed the melody, His Majesty had H.H. Prince Chakrabandh
Pensiri compose the English lyrics – this time prior to
the Thai lyrics.
The title of the song – H.M.Blues --- seemingly implies
that it stands for “His Majesty’s Blues”, but in fact, it
stands for “The Hungry Men’s Blues”. How this came about
was that His Majesty, would get so carried away when playing
with his band at private dinner functions which he hosted
for resident Thais in Switzerland, that he often didn’t
have his dinner until halfway through the night, when everybody
else had finised their meal.
As for the Thai lyrics of “H.M.Blues”,
---“Chata Cheewit” --- Prof.Dr.Prasert Na Nagara
noted that while he was composing the Thai version both
the notes and the English lyrics were in Switzerland, therefore
the theme of the lyrics --- English and Thai --- totally
differ, ever though they both maintain the “blues” philosophical
endings, as His Majesty originally intended.
“H.M.Blues” was performed
by Carnegie Hall Jazz Band, in the United States of American
on May 17, 1995.
