ROYAL MUSICAL COMPOSITION “DUANG
JAI KAP KWARM RUK” “NEVER MIND THE HUNGRY MEN’S BLUES”
This song was composed soon after
His Majesty’s accession to the throne, early in 1946, while
he was furthering his studies in Lansanne, Switzerland.
During that time, His Majesty organized a “Krapong” (‘brassy’)
amateur band and challenged all Thais who had the courage,
to join his band.
“Never Mind the Hungry Men’s Blues”
was composed after “H.M.Blues,” in response
to numerous queries His Majesty had, as to the meaning of
his song “H.M.Blues”. One day, having had
his dinner late, following a musical performance, His Majesty
revealed the answer. “H.M.” is short for “Hungry Men.” Because
of his commitment to his musical performance, he often ate
dinner late, after everyone else had had their meal. His
Majesty asked H.H. Prince Chakrabandh Pensiri to compose
English lyrics under the title of “Never Mind the
Hungry Men’s Blues” to an existing Thai version
of His Majesty’s composition, “Duang Jai Kap Kwarm
Ruk,” the lyrics of which were also composed by
H.H. Prince Chakrabandh Pensiri.
Prof.Ted Pease, the distinguished professor
of jazz composition at Berklee College of Music, Boston,
who performs this song in the collection of His Majesty’s
compositions produced by Chitralada School (1996) noted
that:
‘Never Mind the Hungry Men’s Blues’
is a wonderful swing composition in the style of such Duke
Ellington classics as ‘Don’t Get Around Much Anymore’ and
‘Let a Song Go Out of My Heart’. Arranging this composition
was fun for me because His Majesty so correctly understands
this jazz style. The arrangement just flowed out in a very
natural way” |
