ROYAL MUSICAL COMPOSITION “MAHA CHULALONGKORN”

In the early days of his musical composing, His Majesty followed the chromatic scale, and used complex chords, which although creating beautiful harmony and sounds, were hard to memorize. Realizing this, he dicided to change to the simpler pentatonic scale--- which only has five notes to a chord – eager to prove that even a simple scale was capable of producing beautiful songs. Together with H.H. Prince Chakrabandh Pensiri who composed the first part of this song, His Majesty set about writing a song using the pentatonic scale, which could be easily remembered.

When M.R. Sumanachati Swasdikul of Chulalongkorn University, requested a composition to be used as the University’s anthem, His Majesty graciously allowed them to use this tune, which he had previously composed using the pentatonic scale, and granted permission for Thanpuying Somroj Swasdikul Na Ayudhya and Mr. Suporn Polcheewin to jointly write the Thai verse to the melody.

Early in 1954, the King granted permission to Mr. Taywaprasit Phattayakosol, to adapt this modern song, to enable it to be played by a Thai classical band. Later on, when Mr.Taywaprasit started to teach Thai classical music to members of the University’s Thai Classical Music Club, the song was rearranged to fit as the overtune of each and every performance of the Club’s band.
