ROYAL MUSICAL COMPOSITION “PORN
PEE MAI” "NEW YEAR GREETING"
On New Year’s Eve 1952, His Majesty gave
a blessing to the nation in a song that he had personnally
composed with the assistance of H.H. Prince Chakrabandh
Pensiri. His Majesty talking about the story behind the
composition – “Porn Pee Mai” during the
audience granted to the Organizing Committee on February
22, 1999 at the Dusidalai Hall said;
“People think that ‘Porn Pee Mai’
was composed on or shortly before New Year’s Day, but in
fact it was composed one or two years before it was actually
published. I was living abroad at the time, having had an
accident, and been forbidden by the doctor to play the saxophone.
Anyway, Prince Chakrabandh was staying with me, so I asked
him to blow the saxophone, but he did not know how to place
the fingers for the notes. So as he blew, I placed my fingers
on the keys. In this way he finally managed to learn to
play this instrument. After I had been given permission
by the doctor to play the saxophone again, we started to
play together and compose a melody. One played the melody
and the other accompained, talking it in turns, and writing
down the score as we went along. In this way we ended up
with a completed score.
His Majesty went on to say: “When
it came to the year end, I though we could use the melody
for the New Year greeting. We adjusted and altered the score
a little to improve it, I then passed it to the Public Relations
Department Band to perform on New Year’s Day of that year.
Due to circumstances it was composed very awkwardly.”
The composition was first performed over
His Majesty’s Aw.Saw.Radio Station, and from then on became
extremely popular. It is still widely used today as the
New Year Celebration’s theme song. |
